Recognizing the tremendous accomplishments of the great Senator
Robert Carlyle Byrd for the State of West Virginia and
proclaiming United States Senator Robert Carlyle Byrd the
1901-2000 Citizen of the Century.
Whereas, United States Senator Robert Carlyle Byrd of Sophia,
Raleigh County, West Virginia has contributed to the advancement
of the people of the State of West Virginia, the United States
of America and the world; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd has led an exemplary life,
marked by his many accomplishments and his dedication to his wife Erma, their daughters and grandchildren; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd is the only person in history
to serve as both a member of the West Virginia House of
Delegates, and the West Virginia Senate, and also the United
States House of Representatives and the United States Senate;
and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd has held more leadership
positions in the United States Senate than any other Senator,
including President Pro Tempore, Majority Leader, Minority
Leader, and Chairman of the Committee on the Appropriations; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd has been returned to office
by the grateful citizens of West Virginia at the conclusion of
each of his terms as Senator since 1958; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd is the author of the most
comprehensive history of the United States Senate and is the
world's foremost expert on rules, procedures and traditions of
this institution; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd is an ardent defender of the
United States Constitution, and has made the study of the
Constitution and the application of its principles a part of his
daily life; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd has remained loyal to the
traditional values and culture of West Virginia, and has worked
tirelessly to promote the interests of West Virginia and its
people; and
Whereas, Senator Robert C. Byrd's accomplishments in public
service far exceed those of any other citizen of this state in the twentieth century; therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That the House of Delegates hereby recognizes the
tremendous accomplishments of the great Senator Robert Carlyle
Byrd for the State of West Virginia and proclaims United States
Senator Robert Carlyle Byrd the 1901-2000 Citizen of the
Century.; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to
forward a copy of this resolution the West Virginia members of
the United States Congress and the Governor of this great State.
